This is the official website of General Jubal Anderson Early’s homeplace on 455 Old Hollow Lane, Hardy VA.
General Jubal A. Early was born in Franklin County in 1816 and spent much of his childhood in this home and in the grounds surrounding it.
This historical site is a must-visit for families, teachers, students and anyone interested in learning more about General Early.
Perry Family Scholarship - Tom Talks History 2025

Tom Perry will share stories of Major General J.E.B. Stuart and his brothers—William, who operated the Saltville saltworks, and John, a physician in the 54th Virginia Infantry.

Donations support the Perry Family Scholarship, which has given $4,000 to Patrick County High seniors in memory of Erie Meredith and Betty Hobbs Perry.

Afternoon Tea at the Homeplace
The Friends of Lucy Breckinridge invite you to experience afternoon tea on the lawn of the Jubal Early Homeplace. Music, parlor games with prizes; home tours, and a special guest speaker. Period attire welcome! A variety of teas, soup, dainty sandwiches and savories, relish, cheese trays, scones, and fancy desserts will be served. This event is a fundraiser to clean veterans’ headstones at Godwin Cemetery Fincastle.
Tickets: $25.00/person plus processing.

General Jubal A. Early was born on November 3, 1816 in Franklin County Virginia. He graduated from West Point Military Acadamy in 1837. Upon graduation, Jubal Early was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in Company E of the 3rd United States Artillery and sent to Fortress Monroe, on the tip of the Virginia Peninsula, to train recruits.
Early participated in numerous battles and campaigns including the Battle of First Bull Run (21 July 1861) where he distinguished himself and was promoted to brigadier general. He also fought in the Peninsula Campaign, Malvern Hill (1 July 1862), Cedar Mountain (9 August 1862), Second Bull Run (28-30 August 1862), and Antietam (17 September 1862). At Antietam, Confederate Brigadier General Jubal Early led a brigade under General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson in the terrible fighting in the West Woods near the Dunker Church.

Friends of
Lucy Breckingridge - The Friends of Lucy Breckinridge was formed in April 2024 and is made up of individuals who share a love of history, particularly the period of the Civil War.
Our mission and purpose is to acquire historical knowledge and use this knowledge to educate the public; to help our veterans; to provide cleaning services for headstones so our ancestors are honored; to participate in memorial services for Civil War ancestors; and lastly, to support the Fincastle Rifles.
Our plan is to host many events at the Jubal Early Homeplace, including teas, reenactments, lectures, tours, and other activities.
